Manufaktura St. Lukas

Manufaktura St. Lukas is the household of Baroness Mayken van der Alst, scrivener, member of the most worshipful Order of the Laurel.

I decided to model my house after a 15th century illuminator's workshop with a master artisan, apprentices, students as well as indentured journeymen and journeywomen, and independent scholars. Creating scrolls and other artwork for the Kingdom of Trimaris while enjoying medieval arts and crafts, and camaraderie are the focus of my household. Each member promises to do their best to create a medieval atmosphere in dress, accessories, encampment and comportment.

What are students?

Students are informal members of my household who have expressed an interest in learning more about calligraphy and illumination and working with me. This may or may not result in a formal apprenticeship.  (Please read "thoughts on apprenticeship" for more information).

Current Students:
Ekaterina Korsakova
What are apprentices?

Apprentices are formal members of my household who are belted to me with either an indenture and/or oath of fealty. (See more under "thoughts on apprenticeship" and visit Ragnailt's or Ciar's page for a sample apprentice contract).

What are Journeymen/Journeywomen?

Journeymen/Journeywomen are scribes who enjoy working with me and desire a more medieval, formal relationship just for the fun of it but have no interest in becoming an apprentice.  Just as in medieval times when wandering journeymen would move from workshop to workshop, so do these members join Manufaktura St. Lukas for a specific time period. A one year limited-term indenture with  payment and livery agreement is signed by both journeywoman/ journeyman and myself which can be renewed and re-negotiated at the end of the term.

Sample indenture:

<Month> the XX, <feast day>, in the year of the Society xxxx.

I, <journeyman/woman>, in good faith and without equivocation, place my self in your service and engage myself to work for you, Mayken van der Alst, scrivener, making my home with you, for learning the art or craft of calligraphy and illumination for a period of one year, at the salary or wage of XX in the mixed money now current in our lands, promising to be faithful and honest to you in all things, and not to leave you for a greater or less wage for any reason whatsoever, and to bear faith to you in all that I do.

And, I, the said Mayken van der aAst, admit all the foregoing, and promise by this agreement to give to you, the said <journeyman/woman>, XX every year as your wage, and to provide for you, in sickness or in health, proper livery, instructions, work and patronage for one complete year. Pledging all my goods, etc., renouncing the benefit of all laws, etc.

Witnesses, etc.
